Millennium Centre Guild of Players
Step into the spotlight, or the sound booth, or the paint shop, or the director’s chair. Millennium Youth Guild of Players is where you get to try it all. No experience needed, just bring yourself and some energy. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to perform live, create a set from scratch, or hear an audience laugh at something you wrote, this is your chance to find out.
This isn’t your average drama club. It’s youth-led, which means you and your friends call the shots. With one fun-packed session a week, you’ll dive into every part of making a show:
- dream up a story, create the characters, and write the scenes
- get messy making props, set pieces, and simple costumes
- play with lighting and sound to bring your show to life
- rehearse like pros, learning how to give and take feedback
- show it off: invite your crowd and perform it live in Stranraer
Because it’s not just about the final show, you’ll also get a real taste of how theatre works behind the scenes. One week you might be holding a paintbrush, the next week you might be operating a spotlight, and the week after that you could be centre stage. You’ll see how every role connects, and you’ll have the freedom to try out as many as you want.
What’s in it for you:
- a huge confidence boost (speaking up, performing, trying new stuff)
- proper teamwork and leadership skills without the boring bits
- creative and technical know-how you can use anywhere
- problem-solving superpowers when things don’t go to plan
- the buzz of putting on a show and saying “we made this!”
free materials and refreshments, so you can focus on the fun
This project is more than just theatre; it’s about building something together. You’ll meet people your age from all around Stranraer and beyond, share ideas, and work side by side to create something big. You don’t need to know anyone before you start; the project is designed so that by the end, you’ll have a whole new group of mates who’ve been through the same journey with you.
Who’s guiding the adventure: The project is run by the Stranraer Millennium Centre with facilitator Diana Hamilton. Diana’s worked with loads of young people before, and she knows how to make big creative ideas achievable. Plus, you’ll get visits from guest specialists who’ll share music, tech, or production tips along the way. They’ll give you a glimpse into what it’s like to work in creative industries, and maybe even spark ideas for what you could do next.
Why you should jump in:
Because you’ll get to make something amazing from scratch, alongside people your own age. You’ll discover new strengths (maybe you’re a natural director, or a backstage wizard), meet new mates, and end up with a live show that’s 100% yours. And the best part? The audience doesn’t just see the final performance; they see your journey, your effort, and your creativity. That standing ovation at the end will mean so much more when you know you’ve built it from the ground up.
Where it can take you:
Stick with the Guild and you could help lead the next project, team up with local drama groups, or even mentor newer members. Who knows, today’s experiment could be the start of a future career. Creative industries cover so much more than acting: stage management, lighting design, sound engineering, costume making, even marketing and promotion. This project gives you a taste of them all, so you can see what clicks with you.
The essentials:
When: The first meetup is on 21st September 1pm -3pm
Where: Millennium Centre, Stranraer
Who: young people aged 8 –17, all roles welcome
Cost: totally free
